Dramaturgo, director y actor sudafricano. En 1961 escribió su tercera obra
El nudo de sangre (
1961), un profundo análisis del apartheid que le otorgó el reconocimiento internacional. Insistió en el tema en
Hola y Adiós (
1965) y
Boesman y Lena (
1969; película, 1973, con Fugard en el papel de Boesman). Experimentó un lenguaje visual y gestual en algunas obras como
Orestes (
1971). Posteriormente, regresó al teatro más tradicional. Sus obras
"Master Harold...and the Boys (
1982),
El camino a La Meca (
1984) y
¡My Children! ¡My Africa! (1989) fueron aplaudidas en Londres y Nueva York. Fugard actuó en las películas
Marigolds in August (1980),
Gandhi (
1982) y
Los gritos del silencio (
